Founding, 1989.
|
The first informal discussion of forming a statewide network of organizations was held November 14-16, 1988. Following the signing of a Women's History Month proclamation in March 1989, representatives of many statewide organizations met to discuss how they might advance their common interests more effectively. The first organizing meeting was held at the Orlando airport May 6, 1989. The meeting focused on designing ways to facilitate coordination, provide a communication system, and strengthen the advocacy voice for women on issues that impact their lives. The women present decided to form the Florida Women's Consortium as an "association of organizations, committed to achieving full equality and empowerment for women." After several more meetings to develop a mission statement and an organizational structure, the final Articles of Incorporation for FWC were filed with the Florida Division of Corporations in November, 1989. Founding members of the Florida Women's Consortium included: American Association of University Women, Bay Area Consortium for Women, Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Coalition of Hispanic Women, County Commissions on the Status of Women, Florida Women's Alliance, Gender Balance Project, National Conference Women's Center, National Organization for Women, Older Women's League, and the Women's Political Caucus. |
